Freeze on Carrefour’s Malaysia, Singapore deal

Carrefour has suspended the sale of its Malaysian and Singapore stores after bidders, including Japan’s Aeon Co Ltd offered too little to persuade the French retailer to part with the operations, two sources told Reuters.

Carrefour rejected offers in a second round of bidding that closed on November 5 and informed the potential buyers that the sale process has been put on hold, according to the sources, who were not authorised to speak publicly on the matter.

“The prospect that progress would be made on negotiations within this year has now disappeared,” one of the sources said.

Carrefour declined to comment.

In addition to Aeon, UK-based Tesco and Singapore’s Dairy Farm were vying for the Malaysian and Singapore operations.

Carrefour on Monday announced that it would sell its 42 stores in Thailand to French retailer Casino for 868 euros. — Reuters
